The Medical Council of India (MCI) was the governing body for medical education in India. However, in 2020, the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019 was passed by the Indian Parliament and the MCI was dissolved. The National Medical Commission (NMC) was subsequently established as the regulatory body for medical education in India.
The NMC is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the standards of medical education, registering medical practitioners and regulating medical institutions in the country.
